Watch on YouTube LIVEGet your FREE Tickets to ImmortallWith a legacy of environmental injustice still continuing to plague marginalized communities like ours across the country, Teens With a Purpose created a safe creative community space garden in reply. TWP Youth Poets write and perform as features in the stand-up comedy “Ain’t Your Mama’s Heat Wave” produced by Hip Hop Caucus Think 100%, which is filmed at Norfolk’s Attucks Theatre. This stand-up exposes the truth about the #climatecrisis through comedy.HYDRO-DIPPINGDuring Spring Break teens create hydro-dipped vases guided by visual artists ChaVonne Whistonant. These vases are produced as part of The Herban Project, TWP’s project where teens partner with local restaurant, “Commune” in Norfolk to provide flowers, herbs and produce. The individually decorated vases will become table centerpieces replenished regularly with fresh flowers from the garden at Purpose Park. Proceeds will benefit the teens who maintain the garden.
Teens With a Purpose and Norfolk’s Sacred TreesSix teens spent Thursday morning with Professor Jeff Kirwan, elder endigenous tribe members, emeritus and forestry Extension specialist in the College of Natural Resources and Environment and early afternoon with Stromberg Garrigan & Associates (SGA) and the St. Paul’s Transformation Office during spring break learning the history, legends and importance of local trees then participated in a tree survey to assist with planning efforts for the 26-acre ‘blue-greenway’ resilience park that will protect the future community from flooding and offer recreational opportunities. “Preserving and incorporating existing trees into the redevelopment is a priority of the project” says Dr. Susan Perry – City of Norfolk.PROGRAM SCHEDULE
