Teens With a Purpose is committed to creating platforms to allow young people to use their voice, their powerTeens with a Purpose Banner 1 JPEG compressed their creativity to effect positive changes.  To this end, we have joined in a national campaign to address the issue of racial profiling with the purpose of shifting negative perceptions on black and brown people.  On the local level, TWP is actively engaged in building stronger relationships  between the police force and the community through our Redefining Community Campaign, offered in partnership with the Norfolk Police Department.  The goal of Redefining Community is to continuously cultivate an inclusive community where trust, safety and mutual respect is shared between members of the community and those hired to protect and serve it.

 TWP invites youth 13 – 19 years old to join the national campaign I WANT TO LIVE by telling their stories in the form of poems, raps and words.  TWP will announce one winner, on May 20th. Video contest deadline is May 15th. 

 

The winner will receive an all-expense paid trip to Brave New Voices, the largest international youth poetry festival in the world.  This years festival will take place in Atlanta, GA on July 15th -19th 2015. The winner will  also have the opportunity to perform his or her piece on the BNV international stage.

 HOW DO I ENTER THE CONTEST?

1. Create an original video (4 minutes maximum) that addresses these three points:

– How do people label you?

– Story or Poem about your personal experience with racial profiling

– Who are you really?

– End your video with My name is …. & “I Want to Live

2. Upload video to YouTube.com and send link to twpteenevents@gmail.com by May 15th.

3. Complete waiver and submit with video to TWPTeenEvents@gmail.com

4. Attend the video viewing and winner announcement event on May 20th at the VCM Teen Center from 5:30-8pm
