VIRGINIA BEACH (WAVY) — A community voter registration event was held Tuesday afternoon in Norfolk.

It was held by local nonprofit Teens with a Purpose in partnership with Va. For The People, a new nonpartisan campaign from Pharrell Williams’ Something in the Water festival that encourages people to vote.

“We’re really out here today encouraging people to vote. We’re not telling you who to vote for, we’re just saying get registered to vote and prepare for Nov. 3,” said Stephanie Walters, spokesperson for the VA for the people organization.

The deadline to register in Virginia is Oct. 13, but on Tuesday, they were really focusing on the youth in the community who within the past few years have become eligible to vote.

“We know that many of the younger have not registers to vote and we can’t let voices go unheard in this year’s election,” said Deirdre Love with Teens with a Purpose.

Robyn Johnson Adgerson said she heard the message loud and clear.

“I see this as great opportunity for what my ancestors fought for,” she said.

“Your voice matters, the future is in your hands. What do you want it to look like?” she added.

The event was called Pull Up at Purpose Park and ran from 2-6 p.m. at 801 Church Street in Norfolk. In addition to registering to vote, there was also free food and local music and art.
